portraitMy family loves to tell stories; must be the Irish in us. We have stories for every occasion and opportunity.

For instance, while many people know that Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo came ashore at Ballast Point in San Diego on September 28, 1542, it is only known in my family's oral history that the reason he came ashore was to rid himself of a troublesome Englishman by the name of William Henry Shepard, an ancestor of mine.

William Henry had the misfortune of stealing free passage on the wrong ship and the fortune of inadvertently saving the Captain's life. But, William Henry was the type of man who couldn't refrain from saying what was on his mind. After listening to his quarrelsome diatribes for months, Captain and crew decided to abandon him at the very next landfall, a looming point of land near a useable harbor that would later be called Point Loma.
